Preparing the Right CV

Your CV is a prospective employer's first introduction to you:

  • Write your CV like a sales brochure; try to think what a time-pressed employer needs to know first and foremost about your skills.
  • Relevant information should be presented in a clear, easy-to-read format, max. two pages and as near to the following structure as possible:

Page 1 - Personal Details - Name, address, telephone numbers and email address

Page 1 - Education Details - Most relevant qualification first and then list back in reverse chronological order

Page 1 - Technical Skills - Relevant technical capabilities

Page 2 - Work History - Most recent experience first and work back in date order

Page 2 - Achievements - Relevant achievements that demonstrate your success and capabilities

CV Do's

  • Use short bullet point style sentences
  • Keep the reader in mind at all times
  • Be positive, relay your strengths
  • Do elaborate on more recent experience
  • Summarize subsequent positions

CV Don'ts

  • Lie or exaggerate
  • Include a picture
  • Include salary expectations
  • Write an autobiography, 2/3 pages max
